Some of his most notable roles include those in TV series ’’The Sopranos“, ’’Doogie Howser“ and ’’Boardwalk Empire“. He has also voiced Daxter in the ’’Jak and Daxter“ video game series.

As a child, he attended the same school as Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck, where the four had the same drama teacher. Having discovered his interest in acting, Casella started performing in regional theater productions like ’’Cyrano de Bergerac“ and ’’Night and Day“ at the Huntington Theater. At that period of time, Max was also a member of the Rising Phoenix Repertory Theater Company. However, his first notable role came in 1988 when he appeared in the TV series ’’The Equalizer“. He then played the recurring role of ’’Vinnie“ Delphino in the TV series ’’Doogie Howser, M.D.“ in which he starred next to Neil Patrick Harris. Soon followed a role in the 1992 film ’’Newsies“ which was based upon true events from the end of the 19th century, and the 1994 film ’’Ed Wood“. Three years later, Max portrayed the character of Timon in the original Broadway production of ’’The Lion King“, which brought him a Theatre World Award and a Drama Desk Award nomination.
He returned to Broadway in 2000 to portray Marcellus Washburn in ’’The Music Man“, and a year later, Casella joined the cast of ’’The Sopranos“ as character Benny Fazio, in the series’ third season, and appeared in 28 episodes. Having established a name for himself both as a stage and as a television actor, Casella appeared in the ESPN mini-series ’’The Bronx is Burning“(2007) and films such as ’’Leatherheads“(2008) and ’’Revolutionary Road“(2008). He also voiced several characters including the lead character in the animated TV series ’’Cro“(1993-1994), Zini in the CGI film ’’Dinosaur“(2000) and Tip in the animated sequel film ’’The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea“(2000). The year 2013 proved to be very fruitful for Casella as he starred in several films including ’’The Last of Robin Hood“, ’’Fading Gigolo“ and ’’Oldboy“, and two years later he appeared in „Wild Card“, „Applesauce“ and „Christmas Eve“. Max continues to actively appear in various productions and some of his most recent activity includes the role of Julian in the TV series ’’Vinyl“(2016), Edgar in the miniseries ’’The Night Of“(2016) and Joe in ’’The Detour“(2017).
